1. General Practice (Texas Location):
Stimulants Policy: Stimulants are not prescribed for ADHD at our Texas location.
2. Maryland Stimulant Prescribing Policy:
Initial Evaluation:
For Existing ADHD Medication Users:
A 30-day stimulant prescription may be issued while we verify the diagnosis and assess the appropriateness of continued stimulant use.
3. For New Evaluations or Newly Diagnosed Cases:
Treatment will begin with non-stimulant medications. Progression to stimulant medications will be considered only if non-stimulants prove insufficient.
4. Diagnostic Criteria:
Age of Diagnosis:
An ADHD diagnosis must be confirmed before the age of 12.
Documentation Requirements:
Documentation of the diagnosis from a pediatrician, psychiatrist, or psychological testing is required.
Unavailable Records:
If prior records are unavailable, diagnostic tests and clinical assessments will be conducted to confirm ADHD.
1. Initial Visit:
Prescription Decisions: Deferred unless the patient is already using stimulants.
Evaluation Process:
We will dedicate time to review medical records, establish a therapeutic relationship, and conduct necessary tests (e.g., EKG, drug screening). Primary care physician approval may be required to confirm medical safety.
2. Behavioral and Psychotherapeutic Interventions:
These interventions are essential for managing ADHD symptoms. Psychotherapy is strongly recommended as a complementary treatment.
3. Medication Progression:
Non-Stimulants:
These are the first-line treatment for new ADHD diagnoses.
Stimulants:
Introduced only after a clear need is established and with ongoing monitoring.
Monitoring and Safety Protocols:
Follow-Up Schedule:
Monthly follow-ups are required initially. Bi-monthly visits may be considered as the patient progresses.
Random Urine Drug Screens:
These will be conducted to ensure safety and prevent misuse of prescribed medications.
